Information provided for guests staying in Casa Juglar

Casa Juglar translates into "The house of the minstrel" and we named it such as the original finca was owned by a wizened old Spaniard who earned his crust by busking on his guitar at the local bars and restaurants. The house in his day was "casa guitara".

We bought the finca as a derelict property in 1987 from a wise-guy, an Arthur Daly, character which led to initial difficulties with the renovation.

So after many years of wrangling with lawyers and Town Halls we were ultimately able to start work. We will bore you with the full saga sometime if you are interested, but we are certainly very knowledgeable about how not to buy property in Spain…..

We were not allowed to pull the ruin down. You will see by the photos in the house how it rapidly deteriorated in those years. So the house you see is a build within and without the old shell. Consequently its walls are thick and solid and keep the interior beautifully cool in the summer.

As estate agents so often say that the most important three things about a property are position, position, position and this place is perfect - so near the town yet once "home" you feel you are miles away from civilisation.

Benissa has become much more tourist-friendly with new supermarkets etc., but remains basically a Spanish town. Most locals do not speak English, but as a guide book says if you "smile, point and tip" you can usually make yourself understood.

This is a brief outline of what is what in the house and around and about. It is not meant as a book of rules, but hopefully helpful so you do not spend your entire holiday finding out how the dishwasher works, where the supermarket is or searching for a decent restaurant or beach.
